Four Characteristics of Fathers

As you know, today is Father’s Day; the day that is set aside to honor God’s choice for our earthly fathers. Fathers are commanded in the Word of God to take the leadership in the home and in the Church and if we are going to be the Fathers and leaders that God requires, we have to possess at least four things.

The first thing is humility. Godly humility is realizing and acknowledging that God is God over all and we are totally dependent on Him. That means we understand our inability to do anything apart from Him. Humility according to Colossians 3:12 is to be put on and according to Ephesians 4:1-2 it is to be walked in.

“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.” I Peter 5:6

The second thing is purity. Think of how our society would be changed if we began today to desire and exercise in our lives purity, if we set out to clean ourselves of all and everything that would defile us and to rid ourselves of every wickedness around us. That if our desire was to be clean and pure before God and our fellow man. If we just decided we were not going to associate ourselves with or expose ourselves to anything that was impure. The Word of God declares a blessing for those who will.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8

The third thing is honesty. The very basis of Christian character is honesty. Christians are honest in all their dealings, especially their dealings with God. This also means they are honest with their fellowman. We do not lie, cheat or steal, we do not misrepresent the truth, and we are honest in everything we do.

“Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.” II Corinthians 8:21

The fourth thing is generosity. The Word declares that if we will give it, we will be given it back in good measure, pressed down, and shaken together and running over. Our children should see in our lives a generous and willing heart to care for those around us and be willing to help in the time of need. Luke 6:38

Do your children see these characteristic in you Dad? They should.
